“The world’s oceans face an unprecedented threat, caught between the pressing issues of climate change and growing human demands. With a global commitment to protect 30% of our oceans by 2030, the challenge lies not just in achieving a numerical target but in ensuring that conservation efforts are science-based, meaningful and sustainable in the long-term.

I firmly believe that a systematic approach to conservation is the key to success. In my work, I take into account the intricate interplay of science, conservation needs, interests of local communities as well as business, while also considering security and geopolitical perspectives. By considering all these facets, we can ensure that our oceans remain healthy while safeguarding the needs of the human population dependent on them, especially coastal communities.

My primary focus lies in the polar oceans, where unfolding changes are especially drastic, and where the tensions are only going to rise in the coming decades. Yet, I am convinced that the systemic solutions we employ in the Arctic and Antarctic are applicable worldwide.”
